Heat Wise, Inc.
Heat Wise, Inc., a company based in Middle Island, (Suffolk County), was charged with developing an energy-efficient oil-fired burner that uses less electricity to drive the blower, fuel pump, and primary controls. The motor of this burner draws an unusually low 80 watts, reducing electricity demand by 73 percent.

Heat Wise also developed an oil pump for the burner that uses only 18 watts of electricity. This reduced demand is possible because the pump only requires power when the blower motor turns on.
Additionally, Heat Wise developed a two-stage version of the burner that fires at low level unless there is a high demand for energy, at which time it switches to high fire. This two-stage burner has a sensor that automatically signals it to switch to high fire if the temperature outside drops to a certain level, which makes the system highly efficient. This modification allows the burner to achieve 89 to 90 percent annual fuel utilization efficiency, much higher than the 82 to 83percent efficiencies typically achieved by conventional units. The burner can be used in retrofit situations by adjusting low fire to a level that ensures the boiler does not go into condensing mode, which would be detrimental to boilers that were not designed to operate in that mode.
